Shipping Manual

Shipping Method

The Administration → Shipping & taxes → Shipping methods page contains an editable list of shipping methods present in the store. A shipping method is a set of rules and parameters to calculate the cost of shipping orders to buyers depending on:

  • Order total.
  • The weight of items in the order.
  • The number of items in the order.
  • Settings of specific products.

A customer will be offered the shipping methods that are suitable for his or her order.

How To: Add a Shipping Method

1) Go to Administration → Shipping & taxes → Shipping methods.

2) Click the + button in the upper right part of the page to add a new shipping method.

3) Configure the properties of the shipping method.

4) Click the Save button.

Shipping Method Properties

All shipping methods can be split into 2 groups, depending on how the rates are calculated:

  • Manual shipping methods calculate rates based on the rules you specify manually in the Administration panel.
  • Real-time shipping methods send the relevant order data to third-party services when a customer proceeds to checkout. If the service ships to the specified destination, the shipping method will be available to the customer.

General

  • Name-- the name of the shipping method as it appears on the storefront.
  • Vendor-- the storefront to which the shipping method belongs.
  • Icon-- an image to represent the shipping method.

You can upload an icon from your computer, find it on the server, or provide a URL to the image. Make sure to enter the alternative text that’ll appear when the icon is missing or can’t be displayed. Specifying alternative texts is good for SEO.

Images must be of one of the following formats only: JPEG, GIF, PNG. The maximum size of an uploaded image depends on your server configuration. As a rule, it should not exceed 2 MB.

Delivery time—the time it takes to deliver an order. This info is displayed on the storefront, so that customers can decide if the delivery time meets their requirements.

Weight limit—the minimum and maximum weight of the order that can be delivered via this method. If an order doesn’t meet the weight requirements, then this shipping method won’t be offered to the customer.

Rate calculation—the way how the shipping cost will be calculated:

  • Manual calculation is based on the tables with charges and rates. You define those rates in the Shipping charges tab on the shipping method editing page.
  • Realtime calculation is based on the rates that your store receives from a third-party service. The rates are received in real time at the moment when the order is being placed.
  • Shipping services—the online service or a carrier API that will be used for rate calculation. This select box is available only if rate calculation is set to Realtime.
  • Test—click the Calculate shipping cost link to see a special form to test the selected real-time shipping rate estimation service. Test estimation considers the weight that you specify in the form, as well as the company address and default customer address.
  • Taxes—the tax rates that apply to the shipping method.
  • User groups—the user groups, the members of which will be able choose this shipping method at checkout.
  • Status—the status of the shipping method: Active or Disabled.

Configure

This tab appears only if you have selected real time rate calculation on the General tab. It means that the rates will be requested from a third-party service depending on the order data when a customer proceeds to checkout.

Here you should specify the settings of the selected shipping service. Such settings vary depending on the shipping service provider. So, if you do not know how to configure it, please contact support@wonrika.com

Shipping Charges

If you use a manual shipping method, make sure to add at least one shipping charge for each location where you want it to be available. Otherwise the shipping method won’t appear to customers at checkout.

The rates that you define here are used to calculate the shipping cost, regardless of whether you use real-time shipping rate estimation or not.

If you receive rates from a shipping service provider in real time, the charges from this section will be simply added to the received rates. You can use this to compensate for your actual expenses if they exceed the values returned by the carrier (e.g., packing, insurance, etc.)

The rates can depend on the product cost, weight or quantity, and on customer’s location. Once you’re done specifying the rates, click Save.

Note - A (+) next to the location name means that you have specified the rates, and the shipping method will be available to the customers who specified the address matching that location.

  • Product cost/Weight/Quantity—the minimum value when the rate must apply.
  • Rate value—the shipping rate itself.
  • Type—the type of the rate: an absolute value or a percentage.

Note - If you want to make a manual shipping method free, you still need to add at least one shipping charge for the desired location, or the shipping method won’t appear at checkout. You can set it up as described below.

Products Cost Rate Value Type
More than $0.00 0 Absolute ($)
More than $1.00 0 Absolute ($)

Manual Shipping Method

How To: Set up a Manual Shipping Method

To set up a manual shipping method with pre-determined rates depending on a location:

1. Go to Administration → Shipping & taxes → Shipping methods.

2. In the Administration panel, go to Administration → Shipping & taxes → Locations and create the necessary locations.

3. Add a new shipping method by clicking the + button in the upper right part of the page, or choose an existing one by clicking on its name.

4. Set Rate calculation to Manual.

5. Switch to the Shipping charges tab.

7. Specify the rates for the shipping method. The rates are separated into 3 sections and can depend on:

  • Order Total
  • Weight of the items in the order
  • Quantity of the items in the order

Note - The rates within each section are not summed up. Let’s use Cost dependencies as an example: if you specify the Rate value of 20 for the More than $0 condition, and you want a rate of 30 for orders with the total greater than $50, then the More than $50 condition should have the Rate value of 30, and not 10.

8. Select other locations and set the desired shipping rates for them.

9. Click the Save button.

How To: Make Shipping Cost Dependent on Order Total

1. In the Administration panel, go to Administration → Shipping & taxes → Shipping methods.

Products Cost Rate Value Type
More than $0.00 25 Absolute ($)
More than $1.00 20 Absolute ($)

Note - In this case if the order total is between $0 and $50, the shipping cost will be $25, and if the order total exceeds $50, the shipping cost will be $20. Click the Save button (if you’re creating a new shipping method).

More than 5 item(s) 10 Absolute ($)

Note - To add more rates, click the + icon on the right; it appears when you hover a mouse pointer over an existing rate.

5. Configure the Cost dependencies section as follows:

Products Cost Rate Value Type
More than $0.00 25 Absolute ($)
More than $200.00 0 Absolute ($)

6. Click the Save button (if you’re creating a new shipping method).

Note - The shipping method will be free only for the location for which you configure it this way, and only if you don’t have any rates specified in the Weight dependencies or Items dependencies section

How To: Set a Base Shipping Charge for One Item and Increase it Per Item

You can make flexible shipping charges that depend on the number of products purchased in one order. There are multiple ways to do it:

Way 1. Configuring the Shipping Method

1. In the Administration panel, go to Administration → Shipping & taxes → Shipping methods.

2. Create a new shipping method or click on the name of an existing one.

3. The shipping method editing page will open. Switch to the Shipping charges tab.

4. Select the location for which you’d like to set up this cost in the Show rates for location section. If you don’t see this section, it means that you haven’t created any locations.

5. Configure the Cost dependencies section as follows:

Products Cost Rate Value Type
More than $0.00 4.50 Absolute ($)

6. Configure the Items dependencies section as follows:

Product Quantity Rate Value Type
More than 0 item(s) 1.50 Absolute ($)

7. Click the Save button (if you’re creating a new shipping method).

The shipping method is set up. For the mentioned example the shipping cost will be $6 if one item is ordered. An extra sum of $1.50 will be added to the cost per each additional item in case of 2 or more items.

Note - This extra charge does not depend on the product that is ordered. For example, if a customer has 2*Product A + 1*Product B, the shipping cost will be $9.

Way 2. Configuring Products

A product has a property that allows you to specify a fixed sum of money to be added to the calculated shipping cost for each item of that product in the cart.

1. Go to Products → Products.

2. Click on the name of a product. This will open the product’s editing page.

3. Switch to the Shipping properties tab.

4. Find the Shipping freight field and enter sum (for example, 2.00) which will be added to the shipping cost for each additional item of that product.

5. Click the Save button.

Now let’s assume you followed the instructions from Way 1, and then used Way 2 to set up shipping freight for Product A, but not for Product B. In that case the shipping costs will be calculated as follows:

  • 1*Product A = $4.50 + ($1.50 + $2) = $8
  • 2*Product A = $4.50 + 2*($1.50 + $2) = $11.50
  • 2*Product A + 1*Product B = $4.50 + 2*($1.50 + $2) + 1*$1.50 = $13

How To: Set Different Shipping Costs for Different Products

1. In the Administration panel, go to Products → Products.

2. Click on the name of a product. This will open the product’s editing page

3. Switch to the Shipping properties tab.

4. Enter the desired shipping cost per item in the Shipping freight field.

5. Click the Save and close button

6. Repeat steps from 2 through 5 for other products

7. Create a free shipping method.

Note - The value of the Shipping freight field will be added to the shipping rates of the shipping method.

How To: Make Shipping Cost Depend on Order Total and Weight

To set up a shipping cost that depends on order total and weight:

1. In the Administration panel, go to Administration → Shipping & taxes → Shipping methods.

2. Create a new shipping method or click on the name of an existing one.

3. The shipping method editing page will open. Switch to the Shipping charges tab.

4. Select the location for which you’d like to configure the shipping rates in the Show rates for location section. If you don’t see this section, it means that you haven’t created any locations.

5. Configure the Cost dependencies section as follows:

Products Cost Rate Value Type
More than $0.00 25 Absolute ($)
More than $50.00 20 Absolute ($)

Note - To add more rates, click the + icon on the right; it appears when you hover a mouse pointer over an existing rate.

6. Configure the Cost dependencies section as follows:

Products Weight Rate Value Type
More than 0 lbs 2 Absolute ($)
More than 100 lbs 3 Absolute ($)

Note - Make sure to specify the weight when you add or edit products.

7. Click Save (if you’re adding a new shipping method).

In this case the shipping rates from the Cost dependencies and Weight dependencies sections will apply together. Here are some examples of how the shipping cost will be calculated:

  • The order total is below $50, and the order weight is less than 100 lbs: $25 + $2.
  • The order total is below $50, and the order weight exceeds 100 lbs: $25 + $3.
  • The order total exceeds $50, and the order weight is less than 100 lbs: $20 + $2.
  • The order total exceeds $50, and the order weight exceeds 100 lbs: $20 + $3.

If a manual shipping method doesn’t appear at checkout, follow these steps to find out the reason:

1. In the Administration panel, go to Administration → Shipping & taxes → Locations and check whether a location is set up properly.

  • Check whether geographic areas (states or countries) of locations do not intersect with each other.
  • Check whether the states (if they exist) are selected on the location editing page.

2. Go to Administration → Shipping & taxes → Shipping methods and choose the desired shipping method. Switch to the Shipping rates tab and check the rates have been specified for the customer’s location.
